History
The forming of a Sligo guild was talked about between Mr. Danny Mc Geever and Mr. John O Sullivan in early 1995 and on the 17th of May 1995 a meeting was advertised in the local paper to see what interest would be in the region for a Sligo Woodturning Chapter.
Danny gave a history of the National Guild and set out the benefits of been affiliated. He was well versed in the workings of the Guild as he helped organize the Seminars in Sligo in 1989 and 1990. Danny had already put the foundation stones in place by running Woodturning practical classes from Ballinode Collage. Twenty four budding Wood turners turned out on the night and with that the Guild was formed.

The first meeting was held in the Lungy (Scouts Den), Teeling Street Sligo and was held there for up to a year. Danny demonstrated on basic spindle turning, Sean Burke and Bobby Egan also demonstrated on the night. The Chapter meeting’s from there on where held in member’s workshops.
The Sligo Chapter meetings where held on the first Wednesday of the month and this has stayed as is. After some initial problems one of which was to encourage the members to demonstrate at the Chapter meeting’s the Chapter has held it’s own and allot of the members have evolved into outstanding turners that are highly respected throughout the Country.
